Welcome to Megalong Valley Landowners Association
The Megalong Valley Landowners Association was established in June 1994 to preserve the rural nature of Megalong Valley and represent Landowners interests to local council.
There are no set dates for meetings but are held when topical issues affecting all residents are raised. The AGM is held in August each year and the Association is incorporated.
Membership shall be limited to landowners whose property has its main access via the Megalong Road from Blackheath (that is anyone who uses a section of Megalong Road to access their property) and who subscribe to the objects of the Association and pay the subscribed fee (currently $5). Members may be required to furnish proof of their eligibility eg rate notice.
BMCC Proposes Special Rate Variation increase 10.12% 2010/2011 – REJECTED by Minister
Ratepayers will be slugged with higher charges but see services decline after the NSW Government approved only one quarter of Blue Mountains City Council (BMCC’s) proposed rates rise.
Rates bills will jump seven per cent in 2010/11 — which includes the state government’s 2.6 per cent rates peg — but extra increases sought by the council of 2.49 per cent from next financial year to 2014/15 were rejected. Of the $20 million BMCC hoped to raise from the special rates variation (SRV), it will now get just $5.5 million.
Mayor Adam Searle said the decision would force a review of service provision. “We simply do not have the income to sustain all of those assets at a fair level . . . And by assets I mean roads, footpaths, swimming pools, libraries . . . (and) play equipment,” he told the Gazette. “(Local Government Minister Barbara Perry) appears to have failed to understand this and consequently we will now have to significantly review service levels and facilities provided by council across the whole city.”
But when approached by the Gazette Ms Perry said BMCC’s application was not wholly approved as more work was needed on its long-term strategic plans. The council’s application to almost double the annual emergency services charge was also rejected.
In an open letter to the community in this week’s Gazette, Clr Searle said the partial decision would provide “short term relief” but would not address ongoing financial problems faced by the council. The council would seek a meeting with the Department of Local Government as soon as possible “to understand their reasons and to see what, if anything, can be done about it”, he said. The decision to pursue the SRV was only made at last week’s council meeting when members of the public made a last-minute plea to councilors not to seek the rates rise. All councilors, excluding Ward 1 councilor Terri Hamilton, voted for the rates rise with most declaring it an unpalatable but necessary move.
Councilors and staff were due to discuss the issue at a briefing session last night.
